9/14/2010

Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish

This wasn't my first earworm this morning. But someone starting singing it and then it got stuck.

Don't waste time, Kim.

9/10/2010

Butthole Surfers - Pepper

If you don't know the Butthole Surfers, then you should.

9/09/2010

Awesome Idea!

I just had an awesome idea:

Someone should mashup Rush with Bush!

Or get the members of Bush to sing Rush songs, which would sound so awful that it might be good.

They could be called 'Brush'!

Violent Femmes - American Music

Do I like American Music?

I'll say 'yes' as long as Fall Out Boy doesn't count as American Music.

I would rather drink a bucket of warm spit than listen to Fall Out Boy.

9/07/2010

Love Bites - Def Leppard

Someone should open a vampire-themed cupcake bar and name it "Love Bites".

That might be the most awesomeness idea I've ever had.

9/03/2010

Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline

It's a shame this has become a default Karaoke song for me now. I only sing it because the crowd does that "Da da DAA! So good, so good, so good!"

9/02/2010

Ratt - Round and Round

Why the extra 'T', Ratt? Was the regular 'rat' not metal enough? Not glam enough?

Was there a band meaning where someone said, "Guys, we need another T. I'm serious. We are a glam band. The extra T will give us that extra glam!"

And someone agreed with him.

9/01/2010

Joe Pug - Nation of Heat

The mighty Joe Pug won't leave my brain today.

His single, Nation of Heat, raises some deep, protesting genes that have laid dormant in my DNA. It makes me want to burn signs of politicians, steal money from churches, and refer a soldier to counseling.

I won't actually do any of those things but I want to.

8/25/2010

Kings of Leon - Be Somebody

I think I need to stop doing this blog.

When I wake up now, I will have one song in my head for about 5 minutes. Then about 7 other songs all try to mix in at the same time.

Yesterday, it was Blondie, Modest Mouse, and Dream Theater all jumbled together. By the time I was trying to post to the blog, my internal soundtrack was a mess.

8/23/2010

Journey - Don't Stop Believing

You know this Monday could possibly be the most awesome Monday ever.

Because I don't stop believing.

8/20/2010

Happy Birthday Robert Plant

I really don't want this blog to turn into a "This day in rock" site.

But I do want to recognize one of the greatest heads of hair in rock 'n roll history.

He also sang pretty good.

8/10/2010

Kaiser Cheifs - I Predict a Riot

At what point will the indie rock bands figure out that they are now mainstream?

Then there will be a riot but an indie rock band riot will just be weirdly-bearded guys standing around talking about the lack of existentialism in their music.

8/09/2010

Kings of Leon - Revelry

I enjoy Kings of Leon and even saw them in concert.

I have a feeling that they are about 2 years away from sucking badly.

8/06/2010

Ratt - Round and Round

Nothing like starting your Friday with some Ratt.

8/03/2010

Rush - Fly by Night

I still don't get why Rush is that popular. Yeah, I know Getty Lee is unique and progressive and bleh.

He sounds like a little kid!

8/02/2010

Roy Orbison - In Dreams

I assume this song wasn't written to be creepy, but if you really listen to it... it is.

"A candy-colored clown tiptoes to my window..."

Kinda creepy, Roy. Kinda creepy.

7/30/2010

Jimi Hendrix - Dolly Dagger

Starting your day with Jimi is like starting your day with bacon.

It's salty, delicious and gives you the energy you need.

Not sure why I'm writing a commercial for Jimi Hendrix Bacon™.

7/29/2010

Iron & Wine - Friends They Are Jewels

In this song, Sam Beam tells his Granny to lay her pistol down.

I wish my grandparents had been that interesting.

7/27/2010

Iron & Wine - Peng! 33

This song uses the word "prodigious".

Which is so prodigious.

7/26/2010

Journey - Lights

This is one of those great songs with lyrics that make no sense. Or maybe I'm too sleepy to make any sense of them.

I think he's trying to say that when it gets dark out, he can't decide if he should go home.

7/23/2010

Elvis Costello - Allison

I love Elvis Costello. You know this. I know this. I think I'm going name 2010 'Year of the Costello'.

7/22/2010

Dio - Holy Diver

Dio is all that was magical and immortal about metal.

You know, he invented the rock horns, right? \m/

7/21/2010

Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down

Elvis Costello has become the music I listen to when I don't know what music to listen to.

7/20/2010

7/19/2010

Too tired to remember

I know there was a song, but I'm too sleepy.

I think it had some music and possibly some lyrics.

7/15/2010

Foghat - Slow Ride

The intro to this Foghat classic is about as epic as any song can be.

7/14/2010

Plowed - Sponge

As I continue to do this earworm tracking, I have become hyper-aware of the songs in my head.

This morning I had a Jay-Z, Beatles, Sponge mashup going on.

Sponge won simply because I heard it the loudest.

7/13/2010

All Through the Day - Old Church Hymn

This was an old spiritual I used to sing in church.

But now I'm a sinner who just sings devil music. My life has improved.

7/12/2010

The Beatles - Don't Pass Me By

I know lots of people don't like Ringo Star, but I do.

7/08/2010

Iron & Wine - Peng! 33

I picked up "Around the Well" this weekend and I've been listening to it on and off most of the week.

For the most part, the sound style never changes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a very relaxing album with two of my favorite things in music: harmony and acoustic guitars.

Unfortunately, most of the songs sound the same.

7/07/2010

I Got a Feeling - Black Eyed Peas

I don't like this song. I'm tired of the Peas.

7/06/2010

Kings of Leon - Crawl

Such a great intro on this one. I think I'm all about the intro.

I don't need a good chorus or a good bridge or even good lyrics. Gimme 15 seconds of solid intro and I'm golden.

7/02/2010

3 Doors Down - Loser

Not to be confused with Beck's Loser, which is a great song.

3 Dorks Down is not a great song, but it's today's earworm.

7/01/2010

Cage the Elephant - Aint No Rest for the Wicked

I am both excited and afraid of hearing this song.

In one sense, it has a great throw-back, southern rock sound. But on the other hand, at what point does retro music turn from an homage into mockery?

6/24/2010

Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

I love the layering of this song. Sounds like there are about 7 guitars playing sometimes.

I was listening to this last night while peeling apples. Cuz peeling apples is totally metal.

Also, it's my birthday.

6/23/2010

Kanye West - Jesus Walks

This is one of those songs that hooks me in the first 10 seconds. Love the military sound of this track, which was also used in the movie "Jarhead".

The first 10 seconds of any song is the part that gets me.

6/22/2010

Simon & Garfunkel - Somewhere They Can't Find Me

I have returned from 5 days of vacation. I need about 5 more days of sleeping.

6/17/2010

Rush - Working Man

I'm still not a "Rush fan". Give me a couple of years.

6/14/2010

One Republic - Too Late

I've been slacking on the earworms lately. Since I've moved, I'm out of my routine.

I know both of the people who read this have been very worried.

6/11/2010

Frank Sinatra - Summer Wind

Frank is still probably the best male voice ever. I really don't think anyone comes close.

6/08/2010

Toy 'R Us Commerical

Yes, it was the Toy 'R Us Commercial Jingle this morning.

"I wanna be a Toy 'R Us Kid!"

Fails.

6/03/2010

Velvet Revolver - Fall to Pieces

I remember when Scott Weiland was like the awesomest lead singer ever. STP's Core album is still one of my favorites.

Who came up with "Velvet Revolver" anyway? Sounds like it was computer generated.

PROCESSING... RANDOM ROCK BAND NAME GENERATOR
... SATIN BAZOOKA
... LINEN SWITCHBLADE
... SILK UZI

Actually, Silk Uzi is pretty badass.

6/01/2010

The Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends

I moved this weekend. And I couldn't have got it done... without a little help from my friends.

I am hilarious.

5/28/2010

Kiss - Shout It Out Loud

I'm not a Kiss fan. I would probably like Kiss more if I had never seen them. I guess I get thrown off by the makeup.

5/27/2010

Lady Gaga - Poker Face

Ok Ok Ok. I know, I know. It's Gaga.

But listen. "Glee" did a great, toned-down duet of "Poker Face" that was very cool. You should Google for it, cuz I'm lazy.

5/26/2010

Vampire Weekend - Giving Up the Gun

I really don't like the band name of "Vampire Weekend". It sounds like some Twilight fanfic.

But I do enjoy their music.

5/25/2010

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes - Home

Due to technical difficulties I can't post the video for this song.

But you can google it or vimeo it or youtube it. Whatever you kids do nowadays.

5/23/2010

Amos Lee

I'll give the props to by buddy, Bailey, for introducing me to the very smooth Amos Lee.

5/21/2010

Billy Joel - You May Be Right

I might be as crazy as you say.

5/20/2010

AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie

Can this song be more awesome? I'll tell you.

Nope.

5/19/2010

Elvis Costello - Man Out of Time

Normally I love the start of the song the best, but the ending of this Costello classic is very powerful.

5/18/2010

Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest For The Wicked

I really hope these guys aren't a one-hit wonder.

5/17/2010

Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

Hey, I'm tense and nervous and can't relax.

5/14/2010

Elvis Costello - Everyday I Write The Book

Oh yeah. It's the Elvis. You like it.

5/13/2010

Elvis Costello - Man Out Of Time

I've told you about my musical love affair with Elvis Costello, right? Ok good.

5/12/2010

When you sing this out loud, be sure to say "HEAAA- VUUUN." It sounds the best that way.

5/11/2010

David Bowie - Modern Love

You know how they have "snow days" when there is so much snow that you shouldn't try going to work?

They need to have "cloud days".

5/10/2010

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday

Annnnd, I'm back! After 6 days of semi-vacation, I have returned.

5/05/2010

Savoy Truffle - The Beatles

Thank god, it wasn't Kesha this morning.

5/04/2010

The Beatles - I Will

Someone should write a comedy version of this song and call it, "I Won't."

5/03/2010

Walking After You - Foo Fighters

This doesn't sound like a Foo Fighters song, but it is. No really, it is.

4/30/2010

Killer Queen - Queen

Queen was so ahead of their time.

4/29/2010

Wheel in the Sky - Journey

I'm not really sure why I have two Journey songs in a row. I haven't been listening to them. Maybe there's some Journey deep in my heart, just crying to come out.

4/28/2010

Journey - Lights

Oh yeah, it's an awesome day.

4/27/2010

4/26/2010

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

I love the old videos now. They're so unique. New videos are just posing.

4/24/2010

Blue Oyster Cult - I'm Burnin' for You

I didn't know this song was Blue Oyster Cult.

4/23/2010

4/22/2010

Cheap Trick - Surrender

Huh. This is Cheap Trick. I guess I never realized.

4/21/2010

Ben Folds Five - Best Imitation of Myself

Do you think I should take a class to lose my southern accent?

4/20/2010

Elton John - Candle in the Wind

I wish Elton John could sing half as well as he used to.

4/19/2010

Jordin Sparks - No Air ft. Chris Brown

I could make a Chris-Brown-domestic-violence joke but I'm not gonna.

4/17/2010

Tesla - Signs

When I woke up this morning, I sighed. Not Telsa again!

4/16/2010

Foo Fighters - Wheels

I've never been in a food fight. I think I should have been by now. I'm 33. Shouldn't a food fight have happened by now? I mean, I'm not old but I've been around for a while. Where's the food fighting?

4/15/2010

The Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang

Happy Thursday. Can I sleep in more?

4/14/2010

Talking Heads - And She Was

This wasn't my earworm today, but it was close.

4/13/2010

Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army

My computer bit the dust last week and I finally got it mostly repaired.

Back to the music!

4/06/2010

Simon & Garfunkel - Richard Cory

He surely must be happy with everything he's got.

4/05/2010

The Beatles - Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey

Check out the vinyl... so retro! Yeah, I really don't care.

4/04/2010

Elvis Costello - Peace, Love, and Understanding

I have a new love affair. It's Elvis Costello.

4/03/2010

Elvis Costello - Radio, Radio

When Elvis Costello was first invited to play SNL, they wouldn't let him play this song.

Then he 'sabatoged' the Beastie Boys to play it.

It's so cool, it gives me shivers.

4/02/2010

Simon & Garfunkel - Blessed

I guess I've been listening to S&G a lot...

4/01/2010

Simon & Garfunkel - We've Got A Groovy Thing Goin'

Youtube has changed their vidoe embedding features, which is pointless.

Anyway, it's now a pain to embed video. Not groovy, Youtube!

3/31/2010

Tesla - Signs

This is when rock and roll gets hokey... but in a good way.

3/29/2010

Blink 182 - What's My Age Again?

I remember being 23 when this song came out. I didn't really relate to it. Mostly because Blink 182 sound like they're 12 years old.

3/28/2010

Soundgarden - Blow Up The Outside World

I guess the scientists in this video are from some old punk band or something... from Europe.

3/26/2010

Weezer - (If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To

This song reminds me that I need to get a Slayer T-shirt.

3/25/2010

Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times

Youtube is being stupid this morning and won't let me link the video.

But it's Zeppelin, it's awesome.

3/24/2010

Vampire Weekend - Cousins

Such a great video. Looks like they had a blast making it.

3/23/2010

Tom Petty - It's Good To Be King

Name me a bad Tom Petty song... I dare ya!

3/20/2010

Pearl Jam - The Fixer

I like Nirvana better... just sayin'.

3/18/2010

Dolly Parton -- Jolene

This song has amazing lyrics. Thanks to Sarah K. for telling me how awesome Dolly Parton is.

3/17/2010

Muse - Time is Running Out

Love the intro to this song. Thanks to Brandon for helping me remember who's song this is.

3/16/2010

Weezer - (If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To

"Without you, my heart is blue" is such a wacky, but great lyric.

3/15/2010

Honey Pie - The Beatles

Now don't confuse this song with Wild Honey Pie.

3/13/2010

Pinback - Fortress

This song was jumbled up with Otis Redding and Willie Nelson.

Wacky.

3/12/2010

The Who - Who Are You

I woke up this morning and thought, "What if superman has really been a bad guy all this time?"

I hope you enjoyed that insight into my brain.

3/11/2010

Spoon - The Underdog

Thanks to Brandon and Nikki for telling me who this band is. I could only repeat the horns part with any accuracy.

3/10/2010

Ellis Island - With A Little Help From My Friends

I heard this on Radio Clash over the weekend. Amazing cover.

3/09/2010

Willie Nelson - Whiskey River

Willie is one of my favorite guitarists. His style is so unique,

3/08/2010

Soundgarden - Blow Up The Outside World

Such a great grunge tune! Start slow and simple then melt some faces for the chorus.

3/05/2010

Foo Fighters - Times Like These

George Bush used this for his re-election campaign in 2004. I bet that's why he won... 'cuz, you know, kids like the rock and rolls.

3/04/2010

Willie Nelson - She Is Gone

One year ago today, my mother passed away. About a minute after she passed this song started in my head.

This really isn't a song about death or mothers, but I rarely think about her passing without Willie rolling through my head.

I miss you, Mom.

3/03/2010

Radiohead - House of Cards

So I had a different Radiohead song in my head this morning but I can't remember it.

Bummer.

3/02/2010

Weezer - Pork and Beans

I can't decide if I like Weezer. I used to love Weezer but they let me down with their last couple albums.

3/01/2010

Owl City - Fireflies

This is a good example of a song that I don't particually like, but it's in my head this morning.

It's catchy I guess.

2/27/2010

AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie

I think this song could secretly be about masturbation.

2/26/2010

Foo Fighters - Let it Die

Dave Grohl has hinted that this song is about Courtney Love's influence over Kurt Cobain.

2/25/2010

2/24/2010

2/23/2010

Cracker - Teen Angst

Actually, Cracker, I think the world does need another folk singer.

2/22/2010

Robert Plant and Allison Krauss - Let Your Loss be Your Lesson

I've never really gotten into Allison Krauss, but since her duet album with Robert Plant, I can't stop listening to her.

2/21/2010

The Beatles - Sexy Sadie

This song was written in India by John Lennon. He originally wanted to call it "Maharishi" but George convinced him to call it "Sexy Sadie".

2/19/2010

Cowboy Junkies - Dreaming my Dream with You

Sometims I think the Cowboy Junkies are boring. Other times I find them extremely relaxing.

2/17/2010

The Gourds - Gin and Juice

This is probably the greatest cover of any song... ever. Brilliant.

2/16/2010

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir

This Zeppelin epic was written entirely by the band. They considered it one of their best songs.

2/14/2010

The Cars - Just What I Needed

It's not the ribbons in your hair.

2/13/2010

Guns N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle

Such a great intro to this song.

2/10/2010

The Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends

I think I like Joe Cocker's version better.

2/09/2010

Creed - My Sacrifice

Scott really has mastered the double-fist-pump-yell-singing.

My favorite, worst part of this song is when he sing/pump/yells, "I just waaaant to say HAY-lo uhh-gaaaaain."

2/08/2010

2/07/2010

David Bowie - Young Americans

Modern music needs more saxaphone solos.

2/06/2010

Panic! at the Disco - Nine In The Afternoon

Look, I know the name of the album is "Pretty, Odd" but do you have to make your video so stupid looking?

I do like the song but the video is way too obnoxious.

2/05/2010

Snow Patrol - Run

Sweet, I love acoustic versions!

2/03/2010

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Juan Loco

I really need to see these two in concert. My life would never be the same.

2/02/2010

Elsinore - The General

Hey, it's Elsinore again. Thanks, Kim!

2/01/2010

Missing Persons- Walking in LA

Sometimes I have a double-earworm: two songs swarming around in my ears.

Normally one song dominates the other and I post the winner.

But the 2nd place song today was so funky, I thought I'd share it. :)

Foo Fighters - Times Like These

I like the retro green-screen video!

1/31/2010

Elsinore - The General

I had a chance to see these guys last night. They put on a great show and I think the drummer is awesome.

1/30/2010

Joe Cocker - A Little Help From My Friends

You know, I never knew Joe Cocker was British. Huh.

1/29/2010

The Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy)

The harmony on the chorus is my earworm today. Such a great sound.

1/28/2010

1/27/2010

Pearl Jam - Just Breathe

Eddie has the best "Rock Furrow Forehead"!

1/26/2010

Kings of Leon - I Want You

I think the bass line is the best part of this song.

1/25/2010

The Redwalls - Thank You

I saw these guys in concert a few years ago. Very enjoyable show.

1/23/2010

Angel - Jimi Hendrix

Did you know Jimi played his guitar upside-down?

1/22/2010

Willie Nelson - Mendocino County Line

I thought she was one of the Dixie Chicks. I guess not.

Willie is still my hero.

1/21/2010

Can You Feel It - Jackson 5

Lori plays this once a week on her radioshow. Thanks, Lori!

1/20/2010

Radiohead - Optimistic

See? I told you I was on a Radiohead kick!

1/19/2010

Radiohead - Black Star

I must be on a Radiohead kick. They've been a pretty constant earworm.

1/18/2010

Green Day - 21 Guns

I think the drummer has neck problems.

1/15/2010

The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

I bet they're great in concert.

1/14/2010

Snow Patrol - Give Me Strength

I'm surprised how much I like this album. Not really my style.

1/13/2010

Radiohead - Optimistic

I'm glad there aren't many Radiohead-esque bands. No one does it like they do.

1/12/2010

Cheat on Me - The Cribs

I heard this Cribs song just last night on the radio and the chorus really stuck with me.

1/10/2010

Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home

Nice live recording of this Coheed hit!

1/09/2010

1/06/2010

AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie

This one is dedicated to my friend, Jeff. I had never heard this song until he busted it out (acousticlly!) at our annual camping trip.

Funny enough, I like his rendition the best.

1/03/2010

Fastball - The Way

Great little song by this Austin, TX band.

1/02/2010

The Beatles - Get Back

I want to play on a roof someday.
