I was introduced to NMOS by Skippy in 2006. This album was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Blues Album".

KC Jones has a good ol' blues sound, especially with the piano.

I think this is the quintessential blues song. I personally think that's Taj Mahal's version is the best.

I believe the lyrics reference a drug or alcohol addiction. Each verse talks about how bad something is, and then states, "I ain't worried, I'm sittin' on top of the world."

I'm Ready

I picked up Taj Mahal - Dancing the Blues from the library this week.

Taj Mahal was one of the first bluesmen I heard. I first heard him while listening to the Prairie Home Companion with my dad. His voice is, in my opinion, the perfect blues voice.

I'm Ready is classic rock and roll and I believe it's an original Fats Domino song.

Train Kept A-Rollin'

The Aerosmith version of this song was stuck in my ears this morning.

I played Rock Band last night with Nikki and Brandon. Due to the difficulty of this song, we had to repeat it several times.

The song was originally written by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951. I love the history of music. Seeing a song evolve from a 1951 R&B hit to a featured song in Rock Band is very cool.

My Doorbell

The White Stripes are very hard to describe. Jack White is an amazing guitarist, without-a-doubt, one of the best in the last 20 years.

Some of my guitar buddies have a saying for Jack White.... "F$%#ing Jack White." We're so impressed by him that we love to hate him!

Funny enough, My Doorbell has no guiar in it. Jack is on the ivory.

It's fun, it's up-beat... but I do think that the doorbell reference is sexual.

Blue on Black

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Kenny Wayne Shephard. I should, since I really like his style.

Blue on Black has a great mixture of sound: heavy acoustic chords, eletric blues riffs, solid drums, and Kenny's great vocals.

Perhaps I need to buy s'more KWS.

Darling Nikki

I love Prince when he rocks. This track from Purple Rain is an excellent example of Prince's ability to totally rock out.

I first heard this song when watching the Purple Rain movie. And I believe my friend, Juli, was once quoted as saying, "Nothing beats watching Prince dry-hump a Marshall stack!", which he does while singing Darling Nikki.

Black Tambourine

From the Guero album by Beck.

Beck is different, which is what I like about him. I can't think of anyone else who has such a weird mix of music... except maybe David Bowie. Guero is such a good, up-beat disc. Most of the songs have a slight Latino flavor, a very interesting twist to Beck's easy vocal style.

It's the percussion of Black Tambourine that was stuck in my head this morning.

Turnin' on the Screw

Queens of the Stone Age is one of my favorite bands of all time. And I think Era Vulgaris is their best album.

This song specifically has a great beat, great vocal, sick guitar. It's a great slow-headbang kinda song.

I first head QotSA on the radio with their hit No One Knows, but it was much later when I really became a big fan. I was in Chicago visiting Darrell and Kelly. I'll probably talk about Darrell a lot in this blog, simply because I get most of my music from him saying, "Hey, you might like this. Check it out." He made me listen to Era Vulgaris and I picked it up immediately.

Good ol' Warrant from their Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich album.

Interestingly enough, Heaven reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I guess heaven wasn't too far away.

Boll Weevil

from the Presidents of the United States of America first, self-titled album. You really can't mention 90's music without mentioning PUSA. Known for hits such as Lump and Peaches, PUSA was part of the Seattle music scene. They went through some break-ups but they're still touring today!

Boll Weevil is a funky, little song.
