12/30/2008

Will the Circle Be Unbroken

If anyone wants to play this at my funeral, that'd be awesome.

12/29/2008

Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good

It was actually just the breakdown that was in my head this morning.

Finally I don't have a Collective Soul song! Geez.

12/28/2008

Pearl Jam - Nothingman

Man, this song is a bummer. Why do I have to wake up with a bummer song?

I had a dream that I helped a guy with his broken car and then he went home and died. Yeah, great way to start my day.

12/27/2008

Collective Soul - She Said

Don't even get Seven Year Itch: The Best of Collective Soul. No, don't get it. Don't download it from iTunes. Don't borrow it from your friend, Skippy.

Cuz if you do, it'll get stuck in your head for the past 3 weeks like me. Seriously, just don't.

12/26/2008

Collective Soul - Precious Declaration

Ok, this video is bad.

And not like the cool, fun bad. But a real bad. The song's okay, but they look like Creed.

12/23/2008

Call Me The Breeze - Lynard Skynard

If anyone wants to start call me "The Breeze" or "Breeze" or "Mr. Breeze", I'd be cool with that.

12/22/2008

Amy Winehouse -You Know I'm No Good

Yeah, I know she's screwed up, but I love Amy Winehouse.

12/20/2008

The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider

Hey, a pretty new recording!

I think that's Derek Trucks on guitar too, sweet.

12/19/2008

Some song I don't know

I don't know who sings this song or even what the words are.

It's something like "girl can't help it, she can't help it" and someone in the background say, "Ah-ri!!" or something.

I dunno... but it's a cool song. You should check it out!

12/18/2008

Ben Harper - Burn One Down

Ben is already awesome, but the drummer makes this song awesomazing.

12/17/2008

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

There's something amazing about this song.

"If I swallow anything evil, stick your fingers down my throat" is my favorite line. It's as if the singer recognizes that they will do bad things to themselves and they need someone else to rescue or save them.

Pretty deep for 7:30 in the am!

12/16/2008

AC/DC - Sink the Pink

Gosh, I wonder what they're singing about.

This is a really, really bad video. And that's what makes it awesome.

12/15/2008

Sublime - This Train/Guava Jelly

This train is bound for glory...

12/12/2008

Queens Of The Stone Age - I'm Designer

Man, I havent had a QotSA song in a while. Good times.

12/11/2008

John Butler Trio - Caroline

Sweet, but sad song.

Thanks Skippy for introducing the Trio!

12/10/2008

Amy Winehouse -You Know I'm No Good

Man, I had a weird dream last night.

Nutshell version: a large group of crazy people were forcing different drugs on me. I then used my quick wit and knowledge of drug culture to stop them.

This song was in my head when I woke up.

12/09/2008

Ray Lamontagne - How Come and Shelter

I think it was Marla that got me started on Ray Lamontagne. Thanks Marla!

"How come I can't tell the free world from the living hell?"

12/08/2008

Radiohead - Street Spirit

There's something amazing about Radiohead.

12/06/2008

Grizzly Bear - He Hit Me

Thanks to Nikki for introducing this haunting, beautiful song.

12/05/2008

Willie Nelson - Mendocino County Line

In a secret life, I'll grow old and be just like Willie Nelson.

12/04/2008

Bill Withers - Use Me

This is such an epic recording.

12/02/2008

Sublime - Pool Shark

I wonder if Bradley really realized what he was singing in this song. It feels like he was predicting his own future when he sings, "One day I'm going to lose the war."

Sad.

12/01/2008

Los Lonely Boys - Nobody Else

I think it was Ingrid who got me started on Los Lonely Boys.

Thanks Ingrid!

11/28/2008

Willie Nelson - Poncho And Lefty

I had a dream where someone was getting married and this song was sung at the wedding. Weird.

11/27/2008

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life

Well, that's like hypnotizing chickens... Awesome! Happy Turkey Day!

11/26/2008

The Who - Going Mobile

I had a dream last night, that I was an international terrorist. I was driving around with a team and blowing up sights in Iran or something.

It has nothing to do with The Who, but it was such a weird dream I wanted to remember it.

11/25/2008

Sublime - Mary

Fifteen years old plus one...

11/24/2008

Willie Nelson - Whiskey River

Willie Nelson is about as county music as I get.

11/22/2008

Black Sabbath - Hand of Doom

I like all the needle references in this song. Ozzie doesn't even hint at it!

11/21/2008

Dottie West - Touch Me

This is the only good version of Willie Nelson's classics that I could find. I like Willie's version better.

11/20/2008

Blues Traveler - Yours

Well after 3 days without the internet, I am back!

Today's earworm is a great song from Mr. Popper and company. I had a chance to see them live a few years ago and really enjoyed their show. They didn't do a jam set, which I've heard can be really boring.

11/14/2008

Queen's of the Stone Age - 3's and 7's

QotSA made a great video for 3's and 7's!

This morning's lyrics were, "The truth hurts so bad. Wouldn't you say?" I would say that the truth hurts, but I'll take the pain of truth any day!

11/13/2008

Simon and Garfunkel - Homeward Bound

This is such a great song. The timing is so unique on it. The last time I drove out to see my folks this was the first song that popped up on my iPod. Totally random.

11/12/2008

Collective Soul - Energy

This is the only video I could find for this song. Well, there was a Dragonball Z video for it too, but... you know... it's weird.

11/11/2008

Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock

I used to really like Smashing Pumpkins. Now? I dunno. I guess there's a lot better rock I can listen to.

11/10/2008

Flobots - Fight With Tools

We are non stop juggernauts!

11/08/2008

Bill Withers - Use Me

I first heard this song sung by my buddy, Jeff. Jeff's a bad ass.

11/07/2008

John Butler Trio - Caroline

Kinda weird to wake up hearing a lullaby.

11/06/2008

Age of Silence - The Flow at 9:30 Am

Another great song from Age of Silence, unfortunately there isn't a video for it on Youtube.

Thanks to Darrell for introducing them!

11/05/2008

11/03/2008

The White Stripes - Suzy Lee

Oh Miss Suzy Lee... do you feel the same?

11/01/2008

Radiohead - My Iron Lung

I need life support today!

10/31/2008

10/27/2008

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

Probably my favorite Pearl Jam song. Eddie was a master of the 90s style of singing and having no damn clue what he's actually saying. :)

10/25/2008

John Butler Trio - Good Excuse

"Go on baby, step outside
See what's shakin' in the real world."

Great advice.

10/24/2008

John Butler Trio - Better Than

More John Butler Trio!

Thanks Skippy!

10/23/2008

John Butler Trio - Daniella

Finally some new music. Last time I saw Skippy he introduced Mr. Butler to me. As usual, I didn't like them at first.

But now I do!

10/21/2008

Flobots - MayDay

And my lips become percussion
And my fists become the rage!

10/20/2008

Willie Nelson - Good Times

I couldn't find a good video for this song. I like the premise of it though. What I think it's saying is life isn't always 100% good, but it doesn't have to be 100% good for us to be happy.

10/18/2008

Ukulele - The Final Countdown

Yes, this video was today's earworm.

It's strange but awesome at the same time.

10/17/2008

Bob Geldof - The Great Song of Indifference

Someone needs to make a punk cover of this song.

10/16/2008

Mason Jennings - Your New Man

I finally got to see Mason live last night. It was a great show, very chill.

Thanks Darrell for alerting me about the show!

10/15/2008

The Flaming Lips- Are you a hypnotist?

Awesome video! Awesome song! Awesome!

10/14/2008

Metallica - One

I really didn't expect to wake up with this song. Kinda depressing

10/13/2008

10/11/2008

Radiohead - My Iron Lung

I played Rock Band last night...

10/10/2008

10/07/2008

Yumeji's Theme - In the Mood for Love

I can thank Nikki for today's earworm. I still need to see "In the Mood for Love" but I can already tell I'd like it.

Thanks Nikki!

10/06/2008

Queens of the Stone Age - In the Fade

Hey, this song again. Good thing it's a cool song.

10/05/2008

Queens of the Stone Age - In The Fade

I'm too sleepy to write something exciting. Not that I ever really write anything exciting.

10/04/2008

The Smiths - Please Please Please

For once in my life, let me get what I want...

10/03/2008

The Who - Getting In Tune

I think "out of tune" easily describes how I've felt for the last month.

10/02/2008

Oceans - Pearl Jam

I rarely listen to Pearl Jam so this is cool. I like the earworms that I know aren't from the music I listen to daily.

10/01/2008

Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

This song has only been covered about a million times. Hank's is still the best.

9/26/2008

Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson - Just to Satisfy You

I have an important notice.

If you ever want the greatest hamburger of all time, you have to travel to Austin, Texas. There's a little roadhouse there called "Pootie's Hilltop". Pootie was/is the tour manager for Willie Nelson.

They have a burger called the "Pootie Burger". It's amazing.

9/24/2008

Pink Floyd - One Slip

I actually had 3 songs rolling around in my head this morning. They included Sublime, The Flobots, and this song.

9/23/2008

Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave

Oh yeah!! I can't understand a single word, but it's awesome.

9/22/2008

Radiohead - Idioteque

Last night, I had a dream that someone stole my fedora. If you are planning on stealing my fedora, I'm on to you.

9/21/2008

Queens of the Stone Age - Leg of Lamb

today's lyric:

I wanna follow the laws of man
Bloody apron, leg of lamb

9/20/2008

Grizzly Bear - He Hit Me

Very amazing song. The lyrics are scary.

9/19/2008

Hootie And The Blowfish - Hold My Hand

I havent listened to Hootie in a long time. I still like 'em.

9/18/2008

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

If I swallow anything evil put your fingers down my throat.

9/17/2008

Bony M. - Rivers Of Babylon

Since I seem to post this song often, I thought I'd show an older version. I like it!

9/15/2008

Sublime - Badfish

It's funny. I didn't listen to Sublime all weekend.

9/14/2008

Michael Jackson - Beat It

I like to think that if Michael Jackson hadn't had so many issues during his career, he would have become even more amazing.

Unfortunately, stuff happened.

9/13/2008

Yesterday's Wine - Willie Nelson

Willie is one of those country and singers that I completely love.

Yesterday's Wine!!!

9/11/2008

Devin Townsend - The Greys

More credit to Darrell today.

I first heard of Devin Townsend from his Vampira video. Then Darrell had me listen to the Ziltoid album. Imagine a metal rock opera in space... I know, awesome, right?

9/10/2008

Age of Silence - Auditorium Of Modern Movements

When Darrell first had me listen to Age of Silence I told him, "I don't like it. The piano is weird. The harmony is weird."

About two months later, I listened to them again and suddenly it worked. They're definately different from other metal bands, but that's what makes them good!

Carefully designed by George Reed

9/08/2008

Robert Randolph & The Family Band - I Need More Love

RR is the sh!t. If you get a chance to see him live, do it. By far, one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

Thanks to Skippy for introducing them to me.

9/07/2008

Peter Gabriel - Digging In The Dirt

This is the first music video I ever saw. I remembering thinking at the time that it was the "rockiest" song I had ever heard.

9/05/2008

A Band I Don't Like

Today's earworm is from a bad I hate. I hate their style. I hate their sound. I hate their fans. So I'm not even going to say their name, lest their evil, poser, lameness seeps into other people's lives.

I'm going to drown my ears in Willie Nelson... maybe that will rid this Band-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named from my soul.

9/04/2008

Wishmaster - Nightwish

So, this is this morning's earworm. The first time I heard this song was from this video.

The song is kinda silly, but the video is AWESOME!

9/03/2008

Peter Gabriel - Here Comes The Flood

I had a strange dream about being in a flood last night. This song was playing when I woke up.

Heather put this song on my iPod. Thanks, Heather!

9/02/2008

The Killers - When You Were Young

I played Rock Band all weekend so this morning I was barraged with songs from it.

This one came out on top this morning.

8/29/2008

Sublime - Bad Fish

I didn't listen to Sublime all day yesterday. I believe they are now a permanent part of my brain.

8/28/2008

Ramones - Needles and Pins

Ramones are one of those middle-of-the-road bands for me. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't.

8/27/2008

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post

Once again... I think this song is permanently attached to my brain.

Thank god it's not Fall-Out Boy, then I'd be suicidal.

8/26/2008

Mason Jennings - Fourteen Pictures

I'm surprised Mason hasn't made it into an earworm yet. Mason has such a smooth voice and acoustic style. I'm a big fan.

Darrell again wins for getting me started on Mr. Jennings.

8/25/2008

The Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

Today's lyrics were just:

"Eeeoooooo. Eeeoooooo."

8/24/2008

Phoebe Buffay - Smelly Cat

I wish I could find the punk rock version of this song, but this is close enough.

8/22/2008

Queens Of The Stone Age - Suture Up Your Future

My boys, once again hitting today's earworm...

8/21/2008

Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl

Crap. I knew this song would show up here eventually.

What I like about this song: the beat.

What I hate about this song: everything else.

8/20/2008

Sublime - Little District

There isn't a video of Bradley singing this song. Just a bunch of non-Bradleys playing it, and none of them are worthy of this blog.

8/19/2008

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

Beautiful song this morning...

8/18/2008

Stevie Wonder - Can I Get a Witness

I'm not a big fan of soul, but this song is great.

8/17/2008

Queens of The Stone Age - Tangled Up In Plaid

Today's lyrics:

Gotta keep you all to myself
But you gotta be free
So free yourself

8/16/2008

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post

You know, sometimes I do feel like I've been tied to the whipping post. No, really.

8/14/2008

Kaiser Cheifs - I Predict A Riot

Nice to see that British Rock 'n Roll is still alive and kickin'!

8/13/2008

Flobots - Rise

All praise to Dan for today's Earworm.

He got me started on the Flobots.

8/12/2008

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post

Yeah... that figures. It's been one of those weeks.

8/11/2008

Queens of the Stone Age - Quick and to the Pointless

An amazing live recording of Quick and to the Pointless... I didn't realize the bassist sings it.

8/10/2008

Foreigner - Hot Blooded

Awesome! Foreigner is one of those great, late-70s/80s bands that had so many solid hits.

This song made #3 in 1978.

8/09/2008

Taj Mahal - Blue Light Boogie

I first heard this song on the Prairie Home Companion Radio show. My dad was a big fan of the show and he would listen to it all the time.

One episode they had Taj Mahal on and he did a few blues numbers. I think this was my first real exposure to the blues and I was instantly hooked. Taj played this tune on the piano and it was incredible.

I still have a copy of that recording on cassette tape! Thanks Dad!

8/08/2008

Peeping Tom - How U Feeling?

Darrell gets full credit for today's Peeping Tom earworm. He's been telling me for years to listen to anything Mike Patton does. I finally got hooked when he played some "Lovage" for me.

Thanks Big D.

8/07/2008

The Who - Love Ain't For Keeping

How about that? Another Who song. Why, I've only been listening to Who's Next non-stop for the past 3 days.

I was thinking this morning, the first time I ever heard a Who song was from my buddy, Jeff C. It was during one of our camping trips and he played Behind Blue Eyes.

8/06/2008

The Who - Bargain

I'm only recently a Who fan. I mean "just a couple weeks" recent. But they are slowly becoming one of my favorite bands ever.

I know, I know. I should have been listening to them a long time ago. I'm always a little behind the curve.

8/05/2008

The Eagles - Take it to the Limit

My very first "real job" was at a computer shop called "Computers my Malone". We used to test the audio of CD drives by popping in The Eagles Greatest Hits.

What a way to learn some of the best classic rock songs ever.

8/04/2008

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation

My first introduction to the Pixies came from a little movie called Fight Club. You can't mention 90s alternative without mentioning the Pixies. Too bad they couldn't stick together.

8/02/2008

Sheryl Crow - Soak Up the Sun

This song actually makes me want to go sit on a beach all day.

But I'd probably get a sunburn. It'd be worth it.

7/31/2008

Dr. Horrible - Laundry Day

With my freeze ray I will .... stop the world.

That's right, Dr. Horrible. If you don't know Dr. Horrible already, then you're missing out. I won't judge you for it... much. Listen, it has NPH and Nathan Fillion AND Felicia Day AND Joss Wheadon.

Need I say more?

7/30/2008

ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man

I have a question.

Is every girl actually crazy for a sharp dressed man?

I mean, I don't doubt ZZ Top's philosophy. I sure they did plenty of market research when they developed the lyrics to this song.

Cuffs links? Stick pin? I when I step out I'm gonna do you in!

Those are not lyrics of failure, my friend.

7/29/2008

Gnarls Barkley - Just a Thought

I first heard Gnarls on the radio. Who didn't, right? Crazy. Crazy was crazy huge. I couldn't get enough. On a trip up to Chicago, Darrell had me listen to the whole album.

Today's lyrics:

I prefer peace
Wouldn't have to have one worldly possession
But essentially im an animal
So just what do i do with all the aggression?

7/28/2008

Amos Lee - Bottom of the Barrel

This is a fun little song from Amos Lee. The video is dark but the audio comes across alright.

I think Jamey got me started on Amos Lee.

7/27/2008

Scorpions - Still Loving You

Nothing like waking up and thinking of the MOST POWERFUL MONSTER BALLAD EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVER.

I bet you wish you woke up with such amazement playing inside your skull.

7/26/2008

Queens of the Stone Age - Battery Acid

I had a dream last night that Batman was stuck in a hallway with lasers shooting at him... and this song was playing.

Sometimes my subconscious is amazing.

7/25/2008

Weezer - Troublemaker

Weezer - Troublemaker Video

I used to love Weezer. They were my first concert. I still have my Weezer knit cap and, yes, I still wear it.

But then their bassist left... and they had a couple crappy albums. Suddenly my love for Weezer faded. Their new music sounded manufactured and not created. Nothing was catchy. And I really missed the old bassist!

So when Reagan brought me the Red Album and said, "Hey have you heard this yet?", I replied, "Uhh... I don't like Weezer anymore. I remember when they used to be cool."

She insisted I listen to it. Fine. Whatever. I still don't like Weezer, I think.

7/24/2008

Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild

Sweet, I haven't heard this song in a long time. Today's earworm crawled into the deeper regions of my brains, dig this song out, and dragged it out to my ears.

That's how I see it.

7/23/2008

Sublime - Foolish Fool

Amazing, two days in a row! I need to come up with some fancy, awesome name for this phenomenon.

Like "Duel worms" or "Double-tune" or "Twice Eared"... I kinda like Twice Eared. Maybe someday I'll get a THRICE EARED!

7/22/2008

Sublime - Foolish Fool

I turned on Sublime while doing the dishes last night. So they were the last music I listened to... sure enough..

7/21/2008

Sublime - Freeway Time in LA County Jail

This morning's lyrics were:

"With no protection for my erection, I won't get no VD!"

7/19/2008

Stephen Lynch - Nazi

Gretchen got me started on Mr. Lynch. I love watching his face when he sings.

7/18/2008

The Allman Brothers - Midnight Rider

"And I got ooooone mooooore silver dollah!"

7/17/2008

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

The thing that cracks me up about this video is that everyone is flying all over the stage, except John Entwistle. He's just standing there. His fingers sure are dancing!

7/16/2008

Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking

I'll be the first person to make fun of the Rolling Stones. Sure, they're old. They've been around for - freakin' - ever.

But they still got it. Not many bands can stay together for half as long as the Stones have.

Keep it up, guys!

7/15/2008

Flobots - Handlebars

Flobots again! I guess I listen to them a lot.

Thanks Dan!

7/14/2008

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post

Blues? Meet Rock. I think you two will get along great!

7/13/2008

Yonder Mountain String Band - New Speedway Boogie

Bluegrass is about as country as I get.

I first was introduced to bluegrass from Lucas. He said, "Joe we gotta go to this concert."

Sure enough, YMSB blew me away. This is their rendition of The Greatful Dead's New Speedway Boogie.

Light em up!

7/12/2008

Mastodon - Sleeping Giant

When Darrell first told me I should check out Mastodon, I was hesitant. Darrell likes metal. Darrell likes Slayer. Darrell likes a lot harder metal than Joe does.

However, I love Mastodon's Blood Mountain album... especially this track.

\m/

7/11/2008

Flobots - Same Thing

"Saying the same thing over again..." The harmonies were on repeat in my brain this morning.

7/10/2008

Blank

No earworm today. I was up late last night and woke up in a rush. Maybe that has something to do with it.

7/09/2008

Taj Mahal - That's how strong my love is

This song was written in 1964 by Roosevelt Jamison. It's been covered by Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones and by, my favorite, Taj Mahal.

Today's earworm is this verse:

I'll be the weeping willow drowning in my tears
You can go swimming when you're here
I'll be the rainbow when the sun is gone
Wrap you in my colors and keep you warm

7/08/2008

Flobots - Handlebars

I'm not sure what this song is about. Dan says it's about George Bush.

The video shows two men walking together and then splitting. Later they are opposed to each other.

Lately I've been thinking about the choices we make and the path that those choices puts us on.

I dunno.

7/07/2008

elton john - can you feel the love tonight

Who doesn't like Lion King? or Elton John? or Elton John on a Lion King backdrop?

What a weird video...

7/05/2008

Flobots - Stand up

If you gotta dream and a lot to prove then put your hands up and I'll copy you.

7/04/2008

Sublime - Boss D.J.

Today's lyric is one of my favorite. So simple.

"It's so nice, I wanna here the same song twice."

7/03/2008

Beck - Paper Tiger

I'm a skipper. I have a ton of songs on my iPod and I usually play them all on random. I like the idea of Fate deciding what song I should here.

Except most of the time I say, "Hey Fate, I'm not in the mood for Hayseed Dixie. Skip it!"

So I will be riding in the car and have one finger hitting "Next Song" until I run across something I like. I will do this even for my most favorite of music.

Yesterday, I didn't skip Beck.

7/02/2008

Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence

There really wasn't a song in my head this morning... but then about 11 o'clock this song jumped in. Sweet.

7/01/2008

Mississippi Queen

I first heard this song from Ozzy, which was a pretty good cover.

But then I finally heard the Mountain original... way better! Southern rock at it's grittiest and finest!

6/30/2008

The Look

Wow... my head doesn't like me today.

6/27/2008

War

This song was written in 1969 as a protest to the Vietnam War. I think it could be released 30 years later.

6/26/2008

Plastic Jesus

Cool Hand Luke... 'nuff said.

6/24/2008

Orion

This morning the tune of Orion was running through my head.

Not the Metallica version (which is excellent), but the Rodrigo Y Gabriela version (which is most excellent).

6/23/2008

KRS-One

I chilled out last night listening to Sublime Acoustic on my back porch. This is a wacky version of KRS-One

6/22/2008

Little One

Good ol' Beck this morning.

I was listening to him very late at night while working.

6/19/2008

Dogs Of War

This is a pretty amazing live recording of the Dogs of War and it's this morning's earworm.

6/18/2008

Orion

Gilmore first introduced me to this power duo back in 2007. Gabriela is one of my most favorite guitarist now. Rod is okay ;)

This is their masterful cover of one of the great Metallica instrumentals.

6/17/2008

Little Black Backpack

I heard this song a couple days ago at Jason and Erin's house. We were having a going away party for them. He hooked his Ipod and this song came on. It's so 90s!!

White Flag

I have no idea why this song was in my head this morning. I haven't heard it in a long time and I don't even own it. Weird.

6/14/2008

Handlebars

I have a feeling I'll be posting a lot of Flobots.

6/13/2008

There's a War Going on for Your Mind

The Flobots.

As Dan was driving me to our annual, awesome camping trip, he said, "Man, have you heard of The Flobots?"

"Yeah," I replied, "I played with those as a kid... smaller than Transformers."

"No, ass, Flobots." He popped in Fight with Tools. We listened. I was intrigued.

The way I describe them is, 1 part hip-hip beats, 1 part rapping revolution lyrics, 1 part cello. Yeah, I said cello. Cello... a freakin' cello.

6/12/2008

Deadly Eye

I'm still unsure about The Dwarves. There are a sick, crazy, punk band. And not your grandma's punk either, it's sick, nasty punk. They make the Ramones sound like Willie Nelson. The only part of the song I recall is the start:

Deadly Eeyyyyyyyeeee!

Darrell said to me, "Hey you like punk. You should listen to The Dwarves!" The jury is still out on them.

6/11/2008

Battery Acid

Yes, QOTSA again. I have yet to grow tired of Era Vulgaris.

This morning's lyrics:

Robots, robots
Brainwashed babies
Blood from a leech
Spoken rabies
Spastic, plastic
Battery acid.

6/10/2008

Got My Mojo Workin'

Muddy Waters. You really can't talk about blues without mentioning Muddy Waters.

This is a great recording of one of his best, Got My Mojo Workin'. It's fun to see his stage presence.

6/09/2008

Wildflowers

Today will be a good day.

6/04/2008

Already Dead

Sea Change is Beck's very chill album. It's a good album to just relax to.

This morning's lyrics were:

Already dead to me now
Already dead to me now
'Cause it feels like I'm watching something die

6/03/2008

Remember

This morning's earworm is a Ben Harper cover of a Jimi Hendrix song. Ben's version is heavy on the slide guitar. Awesome.

6/02/2008

Going To California

I played this song about 5 times last night, just to practice it. That did the trick!

Such a great song. So simple and clean.

5/30/2008

Yours

This is one of the best tracks from Blues Traveler's Straight on til Morning album.

It's a sad song. A love song. A vunerable song.

Not the best way to wake up.

5/29/2008

When You Were Young

I played the Rock Band last night and that kept this song by The Killers in my head.

Not sure I like this video, but the song is alright.

5/28/2008

3's and 7's

Queens of the Stone Age once again! Maybe I should start listening to something else... nah.

5/27/2008

House on Fire

I happen to hear this little Boomtown Rats song this weekend. I guess it stuck with me.

5/25/2008

Blue Spanish Sky

Kind of a weird wake up song, Chris Isaak has a interesting voice. Somedays I like it, other days I think it's wacky.

5/24/2008

I'm Designer

Queens of the Stone Age once again. Josh Homme has such a solid voice.

This morning lyrics specifically:

It's truly a lie, I counterfeit myself.

5/22/2008

Going To California

Great song to wake up to. I was first introduced by Zed Leppelin by Nikki, when she got me their box set for my 25th birthday. Awesome.

5/21/2008

Boss D.J.

I can't stop listening to Sublime Acoustic!

5/20/2008

Sittin' On Top Of The World

This is a great version of today's earworm. This is my man, Taj Mahal, singing with Corey Harris playing along.

5/19/2008

Hold You in My Arms

This song by Ray LaMontagne wasn't stuck in my head this morning. But it's today's theme song.

5/18/2008

5/17/2008

KC Jones

... by North Mississippi All-Stars from their Shake Hands with Shorty album.

I was introduced to NMOS by Skippy in 2006. This album was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Blues Album".

KC Jones has a good ol' blues sound, especially with the piano.

5/16/2008

Three's Company Theme Song

Seriously, I have no idea.

5/15/2008

Sittin' on Top of the World

I think this is the quintessential blues song. I personally think that's Taj Mahal's version is the best.

I believe the lyrics reference a drug or alcohol addiction. Each verse talks about how bad something is, and then states, "I ain't worried, I'm sittin' on top of the world."

Worked all summer
Worked all fall
I spent my Christmas
In my overalls
But now you gone
I ain't worried
I'm sittin' on top of the world

5/14/2008

I'm Ready

I picked up Taj Mahal - Dancing the Blues from the library this week.

Taj Mahal was one of the first bluesmen I heard. I first heard him while listening to the Prairie Home Companion with my dad. His voice is, in my opinion, the perfect blues voice.

I'm Ready is classic rock and roll and I believe it's an original Fats Domino song.

The lyrics this morning:

We gonna rock
we gonna roll
'til the broad daylight

5/13/2008

Boss D.J.

I knew this day would come. The day when I would have an identical earworm from another day.

However, I did not expect for it to be the same song as yesterday!

Even the lyrics are ironic:

It's so nice.
I wanna hear the same song twice.

Amazing.

5/12/2008

Boss D.J.

More Sublime Acoustic - Bradley Nowell & Friends...

I woke up singing the chorus:

It's so nice.
I wanna hear the same song twice.

5/11/2008

Train Kept A-Rollin'

The Aerosmith version of this song was stuck in my ears this morning.

I played Rock Band last night with Nikki and Brandon. Due to the difficulty of this song, we had to repeat it several times.

The song was originally written by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951. I love the history of music. Seeing a song evolve from a 1951 R&B hit to a featured song in Rock Band is very cool.

5/10/2008

Saw Red

from Sublime Acoustic - Bradley Nowell & Friends.

Yeah, I continue to listen to this album. I doubt I'll be able to stop. Thanks, Lyn!

Baby, if you want to get high.
Baby, if you wanna get low.
It makes no sense at all.
I saw red.

5/09/2008

My Doorbell

The White Stripes are very hard to describe. Jack White is an amazing guitarist, without-a-doubt, one of the best in the last 20 years.

Some of my guitar buddies have a saying for Jack White.... "F$%#ing Jack White." We're so impressed by him that we love to hate him!

Funny enough, My Doorbell has no guiar in it. Jack is on the ivory.

It's fun, it's up-beat... but I do think that the doorbell reference is sexual.

5/08/2008

[Songless]

I woke up today without a song. That doesn't happen very often. Maybe I had a weird dream.

5/07/2008

Blue on Black

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Kenny Wayne Shephard. I should, since I really like his style.

Blue on Black has a great mixture of sound: heavy acoustic chords, eletric blues riffs, solid drums, and Kenny's great vocals.

Perhaps I need to buy s'more KWS.

5/06/2008

Darling Nikki

I love Prince when he rocks. This track from Purple Rain is an excellent example of Prince's ability to totally rock out.

I first heard this song when watching the Purple Rain movie. And I believe my friend, Juli, was once quoted as saying, "Nothing beats watching Prince dry-hump a Marshall stack!", which he does while singing Darling Nikki.

The lyrics for this morning were running through my head with Prince's screaming:

Her lovin' will kick your behind
Oh, she'll show you no mercy
But she'll sho'nuff sho'nuff show you how to grind

5/05/2008

Black Tambourine

From the Guero album by Beck.

Beck is different, which is what I like about him. I can't think of anyone else who has such a weird mix of music... except maybe David Bowie. Guero is such a good, up-beat disc. Most of the songs have a slight Latino flavor, a very interesting twist to Beck's easy vocal style.

It's the percussion of Black Tambourine that was stuck in my head this morning.

5/04/2008

Turnin' on the Screw

Queens of the Stone Age is one of my favorite bands of all time. And I think Era Vulgaris is their best album.

This song specifically has a great beat, great vocal, sick guitar. It's a great slow-headbang kinda song.

I first head QotSA on the radio with their hit No One Knows, but it was much later when I really became a big fan. I was in Chicago visiting Darrell and Kelly. I'll probably talk about Darrell a lot in this blog, simply because I get most of my music from him saying, "Hey, you might like this. Check it out." He made me listen to Era Vulgaris and I picked it up immediately.

The lyrics specifically today are: I'm a mess I guess. I'm turnin' on the screw.

5/03/2008

Heaven

Yes, glam-band.

Good ol' Warrant from their Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich album.

Interestingly enough, Heaven reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I guess heaven wasn't too far away.

5/02/2008

Boll Weevil

from the Presidents of the United States of America first, self-titled album. You really can't mention 90's music without mentioning PUSA. Known for hits such as Lump and Peaches, PUSA was part of the Seattle music scene. They went through some break-ups but they're still touring today!

Boll Weevil is a funky, little song.

The lyrics that were earwormed today were:

Spends all day on his big butt
And he dont ever ever get outside

Sounds relaxing.

5/01/2008

Little District

From Sublime Acoustic - Bradley Nowell & Friends.

Yeah, I've been listening to this album non-stop. Thanks, Lyn!

4/30/2008

Rivers of Babylon

This morning it was Rivers of Babylon, from Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Friends.

I first heard this song on April 12, 2008. I was riding in the car with Lyn A. We were in Austin, TX, headed to a camping site. Lyn played the entire album for me and I instantly adored the album. About 2 weeks later, Lyn sent me the album as a surprise.

What I like about this song:

a) It's acoustic. I love acoustic.

b) Although it's a live recording the quality is very good. Most live recordings sound bad nowadays, this one sure doesn't.

c) Someone is singing harmony.

and d) It's has biblical references, which sounds strange coming from Nowell.

What's an Earworm?

Do you know remember the Kit-Kar Bar theme song? or how about the Jeopardy! song? When songs or portions of songs get "stuck" in your "head", that's an earworm.

I have an earworm just about every morning. Most of the time it's different too. I thought it would be fun to track each morning's theme song.
